Windows® XP Disk Defragmemtation Utility
What is Disk Defrag?
Disk Defrag utility is a tool installed with Windows that will “defragment” your hard disk, thus making it run faster and perform more reliably. The reason this has to be done is that the nature of a hard disk is to store little fragments of a file on several diffierent places on the drive, to quickly save files without the hassle of re-arranging everything. Over time little bits of files get spread throughout the drive, taking the drive longer to assemble the “fragmented” bits together. Defragmenting, will reduce this fragmentation and re-order the files in the most efficient manner.
When should you Defrag the Disk?
If you download many files, work with video or digital audio ( which are very large files) or other large files and do a lot of file deletions, you should defragment the hard drive at least once evey 3 months or so.
If you do very little of the above, surf the net or just email, than once every six months or so should be sufficient .
If you notice your system slowing down over time (programs taking longer to start) compared to when you first got your system and the cause is NOT malware, then do the defragmentation procedure.
