Prevent Spyware
Where does spyware come from?
Spyware is most commonly installed as a component of freeware and shareware applications. Whenever you install something on your computer, make sure you carefully read all disclosures, including the license agreement and privacy statement. Sometimes the inclusion of spyware is documented, but it may appear at the end of a license agreement or privacy statement.
How can I avoid spyware?
Key spyware prevention tips include:
* Install and run anti-spyware software.
* Surf and download smarter.
o Be more cautious when downloading free software, especially “free” file-sharing applications, which often are bundled with spyware.
o Do not download or run e-mail attachments unless you know what they are.
o Only download from Web sites and people you trust.
* Keep your operating system up-to-date.
* Adjust your Web browser’s security settings or use a more secure Web browser.
* Use a firewall. Most operating systems include built-in firewall software.
* Never click “agree” or “OK” to close a window. Instead, click the red “x” in the corner of the window or press the Alt + F4 buttons on your keyboard to close a window.
Running Anti-Spyware Software
1. Due to the complex nature of spyware applications, no single software program offers complete protection. Several commercial anti-spyware applications are available. Using multiple anti-spyware tools and downloading with caution are the best ways to secure your computer. See the anti-spyware software applications below for more options.
2. Check for the latest updates immediately, before running a spyware scan. Just as with antivirus software, you must update your spyware definitions regularly and scan your computer at least once a week.
3. Set your spyware options for the highest level of scanning and to fix spyware automatically. Be sure to install and run anti-spyware software on all the computers that you use (office, home, lab, etc …).
4. Be cautious of what you delete from your computer. When in doubt,DONT
