Internet Explorer Shortcut Keys

You can use Internet Explorer keyboard shortcuts keys to view and explore Web pages, preview pages before printing, use the Address bar, work with favorites, and edit.

While viewing and exploring Web pages, you can use the following shortcuts:

F1 Will display Internet Explorer Help, or when in a dialog box, it will display context Help on an item.

F11 Will toggle between full-screen and regular views of the browser window.

TAB Moves forward through the items on a Web page, the Address bar, and the Links bar.

SHIFT+TAB Moves back through the items on a Web page, the Address bar, and the Links bar.

ALT+HOME Sends you to your Home page.

ALT+RIGHT ARROW Goes to the next page.

ALT+LEFT ARROW or BACKSPACE To go to the previous page.

SHIFT+F10 Displays a shortcut menu for a link.

CTRL+TAB or F6 Moves forward between frames.

SHIFT+CTRL+TAB Moves back between frames.

UP ARROW Scrolls toward the beginning of a document.

DOWN ARROW Scrolls toward the end of a document.

PAGE UP Scrolls toward the beginning of a document in larger increments.

PAGE DOWN Scrolls toward the end of a document in larger increments.

HOME Moves to the beginning of a document.

END Moves to the end of a document.

CTRL+F executes “Find on this page”.

F5 or CTRL+R refreshes the current Web page.

CTRL+F5 Refreshes the current Web page, even if the time stamp for the Web version and your locally stored version are the same.

ESC Stops downloading a page.

CTRL+O or CTRL+L Use either of these to go to a new location.

CTRL+N Opens a new window.

CTRL+W Closes the current window.

CTRL+S Saves the current page.

CTRL+P Prints the current page or active frame.

ENTER Activates a selected link.

CTRL+E Opens the Search bar.

CTRL+I Opens the Favorites bar.

CTRL+H Opens the History bar.

CTRL+ click Use this in the History or Favorites bars to open multiple folders.

While using the Print Preview shortcut:

ALT+P Sets printing options and prints the page.

ALT+U is used to change paper, headers and footers, orientation, and margins for this page.

ALT+HOME Displays the first page to be printed.

ALT+LEFT ARROW Displays the previous page to be printed.

ALT+A Types the number of the page you want displayed.

ALT+RIGHT ARROW Displays the next page to be printed.

ALT+END Displays the last page to be printed.

ALT+MINUS Will Zoom out.

ALT+PLUS Will Zoom in.

ALT+Z Displays a list of zoom percentages.

ALT+F Specifies how you want frames to print. This option is available only if you are printing a Web page that uses frames.

ALT+C Closes Print Preview.

These shortcuts are available when using the Address Bar

ALT+D Selects the text in the Address bar.

How to clear IE 7 temporary cache

Each time one visits a web page with Internet Explore 7, the browser caches or stores files including images of the web page on their machine. This is done so that the web page does not have to be retrieved again. In essence, your the browser stores these files and images in order to quickly provide content.

Thus, when an edit has been made to a web page, if the browser the client has been using has stored a previous version, the client may not see the new changes. To clear your bowser’s Internet cache in IE 7, following the following directions:

Internet Explorer 7 Cache Clearing

Open Internet Explorer and locate Tools in the top menu.

Select “Internet Options” in the drop down menu.

Next, locate “Browsing history” and click Delete.

Locate “Temporary Internet Files” – Copies of web pages, images, and media that are saved for faster viewing – and click: Delete files.

You will receive a pop-up warning entitled “Delete Files – Are you sure you want to delete all temporary Internet Explorer files? Click: Yes

Locate “History” – List of website you have visited – and click Delete history.

You will receive a pop-up warning entitled “Delete History – Are you sure you want to delete your history of visited websites? Click: Yes

Close and then click OK to exit.

One should clear their browser’s cache (temporary Internet files and history) on a regular basis in order for the browser to function more efficiently.

System Information Utilities

The Windows System Information utility collects information about your computer system and then displays it back to you in an organized menu format. By using this utility you will be able to see a detailed listing of your System’s Configuration as well as information regarding your System’s Components. This can be quite useful especially if you find yourself on the phone with a Support Technician who needs this information to help you resolve a problem.

However I have found 2 better utilities:

1. Belarc Advisor from Belarc.com. This program produces a very detailed report of both your computer hardware & installed software. The program also checks a database to verify your Windows OS is up to date for those all important security patches.

The report produced is readable in your browser. From there you can save a copy to disk or print a hard copy. However, you must re-run the Advisor, to update the report after installing any new hardware/software/updates.

2. Auslogics System Information from Auslogics. This utility provides comprehensive and easy to understand information about your system configuration.

It will show hardware configuration, video-card information, OS details, list of running processes, and other information. This information can be saved as a file and sent to technical support. And it’s absolutely FREE.

Using CCleaner Utility

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.

Advantages: cleans junk, cookies, temporary files, registry, startup files and more

Disadvantages: none

CCleaner (originally Crap Cleaner) gives your PC’s hard drives a quick scan to search for all the junk files and clutter that may be slowing it down or causing problems. It removes cookies from hidden folders that I didn’t even realize were there, removes files left over from removed programs and clears out all temporary files.

This software also has a seperate registry editor, and I’m sure you’ll be surprised at what is found the first time you run it. Of course, you are given the option to make a backup of your registry before any files are removed-highly recommended.

There is also another handy utility built in to this program, which provides much more convenient access to uninstall unwanted programs and does the job much faster than Windows.

As though this isn’t enough, from within the Ccleaner interface, you can also choose which programs you want loading up at startup. If you want to keep your PC regularly clean, then this regularly updated program is essential.

I recommended running this program in conjunction with Auslogic’s disk defragmenter.

Better Defragmentation Utility

Defragmentation utilities defragment your hard disk, that is, they move the various fragments of your file so that they are in one contiguous chunk. A defragmented hard disk has two big advantages over a fragmented one – your system will operate more efficiently, since the operating system does not have to move the drive head of the drive all over the hard disk to load the different portions of a file, and it is generally slightly easier to recover an accidentally deleted file, since the various segments of the file are placed in contiguous clusters. Vista-View your computer information

You can view a summary of important information about your computer by opening System in Control Panel. You can see basic hardware information, such as your computer’s name, and which edition of Windows your computer is running. You can change important system settings by clicking the links in the left pane of System.

Vista-Restore Point

System Restore helps you restore your computer’s system files to an earlier point in time. It’s a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.

Sometimes, the installation of a program or a driver can cause an unexpected change to your computer or cause Windows to behave unpredictably. Usually, uninstalling the program or driver corrects the problem. If uninstalling does not fix the problem, you can try restoring your computer’s system to an earlier date when everything worked correctly.

System Restore uses a feature called System Protection to regularly create and save restore points on your computer. These restore points contain information about registry settings and other system information that Windows uses. You can also create restore points manually.

System Restore is not intended for backing up personal files, so it cannot help you recover a personal file that has been deleted or damaged. You should regularly back up your personal files and important data using a backup program.
