The Windows System Information utility collects information about your computer system and then displays it back to you in an organized menu format. By using this utility you will be able to see a detailed listing of your System’s Configuration as well as information regarding your System’s Components. This can be quite useful especially if you find yourself on the phone with a Support Technician who needs this information to help you resolve a problem.

However I have found 2 better utilities:

1. Belarc Advisor from Belarc.com. This program produces a very detailed report of both your computer hardware & installed software. The program also checks a database to verify your Windows OS is up to date for those all important security patches.

The report produced is readable in your browser. From there you can save a copy to disk or print a hard copy. However, you must re-run the Advisor, to update the report after installing any new hardware/software/updates.

Program Download

Program Installation

2. Auslogics System Information from Auslogics. This utility provides comprehensive and easy to understand information about your system configuration.

It will show hardware configuration, video-card information, OS details, list of running processes, and other information. This information can be saved as a file and sent to technical support. And it’s absolutely FREE.

Program Download

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.

Advantages: cleans junk, cookies, temporary files, registry, startup files and more

Disadvantages: none

CCleaner (originally Crap Cleaner) gives your PC’s hard drives a quick scan to search for all the junk files and clutter that may be slowing it down or causing problems. It removes cookies from hidden folders that I didn’t even realize were there, removes files left over from removed programs and clears out all temporary files.

This software also has a seperate registry editor, and I’m sure you’ll be surprised at what is found the first time you run it. Of course, you are given the option to make a backup of your registry before any files are removed-highly recommended.

There is also another handy utility built in to this program, which provides much more convenient access to uninstall unwanted programs and does the job much faster than Windows.

As though this isn’t enough, from within the Ccleaner interface, you can also choose which programs you want loading up at startup. If you want to keep your PC regularly clean, then this regularly updated program is essential.

I recommended running this program in conjunction with Auslogic’s disk defragmenter.

Defragmentation utilities defragment your hard disk, that is, they move the various fragments of your file so that they are in one contiguous chunk. A defragmented hard disk has two big advantages over a fragmented one – your system will operate more efficiently, since the operating system does not have to move the drive head of the drive all over the hard disk to load the different portions of a file, and it is generally slightly easier to recover an accidentally deleted file, since the various segments of the file are placed in contiguous clusters. This program is for both Windows XP and Vista. Download program here.

• Double-click My Computer, right-click the hard disk on which you want to free space, which is typically your Local Disk (C:)
• Click Properties, and then click Disk Cleanup on the General tab.
• On the Disk Cleanup tab, click to select the check boxes of the files that you want to remove (be sure to put a check mark beside of all Temporary Files), click OK, click Yes, and then click OK.

Step #2: Remove Unnecessary Startup Items
• Right click on the Start button
• Click Open or Open All Users
• Open the Programs folder
• Open the Startup folder Delete any items that you do not need running when Windows starts

Step #3: Remove Unused Programs
Over time you may find that you have applications installed that you do not use or you have never used. Removing these applications will free disk space on your computer and reduce clutter. Remember, if you are unsure as to whether you need a program on your computer, do not remove it.
To remove unnecessary programs:
• Click Start, Control Panel
• Double click Add/Remove Programs
• Scroll through this list and find any programs that you are sure do not need (if in doubt leave it!)
• Highlight the unneeded program
• Click the Change/Remove button

Step #4: Clear Browser Cache
For Internet Explorer version 7
• Click Start –> Settings –> Control Panel
• Double click the Internet Options icon
• Choose the General tab
• Click the button: Delete Cookies and then click OK
• Click the button: Delete Files
• Check the box that says Delete all offline content
• Click OK

Step #5: Make Sure Your Hardware is Operating Correctly
• Click Start –> Settings –> Control Panel
• Double click the System icon
• Click the Hardware tab
• Click the Device Manager button
• Click View and click Devices by type
• Device Manager will allow you to see the hardware that is currently installed on your system. When you open Device Manager you will see a listing of hardware categories. If these items are all installed correctly, you will see plus signs next to each category and they will not be expanded. If you notice that you have hardware that has a yellow exclamation point icon next to the name of the device, then the device is either not installed correctly or it has a resource conflict with another device. If you see any listings for “Unknown Devices”, this indicates hardware that has no drivers installed for it. If you notice that it appears that some of your devices are not correctly installed, it may be an improperly installed software driver.

Step #6: Run Disk Error Checking
Disk Error Checking has the ability to check the disk surface of the hard drive and fix damaged files. It is recommended that you use this utility when you do not need to use your computer for an extended period of time. Scanning will run more quickly and with less interruption if performed while in Safe Mode. However, Safe Mode it is not necessarily required.
• Restart your computer
• As soon as your computer begins starting back up, hold down the Shift key
• Once Windows loads, you will notice that the words “Safe Mode” are displayed on your desktop
• Click to put check marks beside the Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors option boxes (Note: Uncheck these options for a quicker but less thorough scan) and click START (you can also use msconfig from RUN box).

Step #7: Run Disk Defragmenter
It is recommended that you use this utility when you do not need to use your computer for an extended period of time. Defragmenting will run more quickly and with less interruption if performed while in Safe Mode. However, Safe Mode it is not necessarily required.
