Make a complete Windows registry backup using ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility for NT).

Microsoft made a wise decision at the time of its invention of Windows 95 to systematize all computer and application specific data which was broaden over numerous INI files prior in a centralized Windows database. This is called as the system “registry“. In the entire windows system today, the registry is the crucial parts and without the registry the system will not boot. The registry is very sensitive to get damaged or corruption hence it is highly advisable to back the registry files from time to time.

ERUNT is a utility tool using which can help you to execute the complete the Backup and Restore process of registry files for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP/Vista. You can back up your registry by two methods using System Restore or using ERUNT.

After downloading ERUNT you can install it on your system wherein you have to backup your registry. After installation you can find the shortcut of ERUNT the Startup. This process backup the registry for the date on which you have created the back up.

Why use ERUNT ?

When I REALLY need the MS System Restore function to get me out of registry trouble, it will not always work.

I need to have an easy, quick way to create one or more full registry backups, independent of System Restore, whenever I want (e.g. before I install any application that might corrupt my registry database).

I need to have backups created automatically every day, with the versions for prior days limited in number and with the older versions that are excess to requirements being deleted automatically (because I will forget to do all that).

I need to be able to restore a backed up registry easily from within WindowsXP/Vista.

If I can’t boot into Windows XP/Vista, I need some reliable way to get at the backups of the registry that are on my hard drive, preferably by booting into Safe Mode..

On some occasions it may not be possible to boot into Safe Mode, and therefore I also need to be able to restore a backup of the registry after booting with a bootable CD (UBCD4WIN CD).

**Please note: The “Export registry” function in Windows Regedit is of no benifit if you have to create a complete backup of the registry. It does not export the whole of the registry (for example, from the “SECURITY” hive no information is saved), also the exported file can’t be used later to replace the current registry with the old one. However if you re-import the file, it gets merged with the existing registry without deleting anything which is added since the export.

Please view the video below:

You can download ERUNT from Majorgeeks or from the author’s web site.

You installed an antivirus, commercial or not, and you would like to know is he well configured, that he is active and that you are well protected. It is not recommended playing with fire and visiting dangerous websites to check can your antivirus detect any kind of virus. You would indeed be likely to expose your computer at the very important risk which can go until the compromising of your computer and the loss of data.

To test your anti virus in full safety, you can use the file of Eicar test. This file is detected as a virus by the anti viruses but it is not one, it does not contain any viral code. If the false virus is detected, it is that your anti virus is active and protects you.

1. To create this false virus, you need simply to create a file inside Windows. Click on the Start button, All Programs, Accessories then on Notepad.

2. Then cut and paste the following character string in the Notepad:

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTI VIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

3. Then save the file while clicking on File then Save as.

4. Unroll the “Save as type” list then select the option All files.

5. Add the name of file eicar.com in the zone File name. Choose the location where you want to save it (on Desktop) and then click on Save button.

6. If your antivirus is correctly activated, it must then alert you instantaneously presence of the Eicar virus.

7. Then ask your antivirus to remove the file.

8. Go to the EICAR web site & download the test file ” eicar.com “. During the download, this will test your AV’s ability to scan downloads.

If your antivirus does not see anything, than you have a problem. It could be because of two reasons: permanent protection is badly configured or there were some problems during antivirus installation. Then you have to read documentation of your software to correct this problem.

**Only do this test after you have updated the file signiture files in your AV software. If the false virus is still not detected, you must then seriously think of changing anti-virus software.

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format developed by Adobe as a means of distributing compact, platform-independent documents. It is superficially similar to HTML; a PDF document may contain images and text, as well as hyperlinks. However, as PDF is based on a variant of PostScript, each document is self-contained, packing text, graphics, and fonts into a single file. With the aid of Adobe Acrobat, many word processing and desktop publishing applications can be used to create PDF files. For this reason, and because PDF documents are web accessible, yet display exactly as intended, print publishers often favor PDF over HTML.

PDF is cross-platform, indexable, universally printable, universally viewable, secure and more compact than other document formats.

CROSS-PLATFORM: PDF files can be created on one type of computer and read and printed on another. The file format is independent of the software, hardware, and the operating system used to create the file. In simple words; you can, for example, read a PDF document in Windows that was created on a Macintosh that you downloaded from a web site running Linux.

INDEXABLE: PDF files can contain physical links to different parts of the document. This allows users to quickly jump about the document, from one part of the document to another, following a particular topic. Such links include jumps to specified pages within the document or externally, for example linking to pages on an external document across the internet. Another important type of link is the bookmark. These can be displayed in a window down the side of the document, where they act as contents pages. Thumbnails provide a useful method of searching for pictures and diagrams in a document.

UNIVERSALLY PRINTABLE: PDF files are based on the PostScript language imaging model. This enables sharp, colour-precise printing on almost all printers. Being PostScript based means that PDF files are an acceptable medium for supplying art work to print companies.

ULTRA-VIEWABLE: On computer screens PDF files have a precise colour match regardless of the monitor used. They allow the user to magnify documents up to 800% without loss of clarity in text or graphics.

SMALLER: PDF files are very compact. They can, for example, be 1/5 of the size of their HTML counterpart and in most cases will be similarly smaller than word processor or drawing package files.

Live URL links can be incorporated into documents.

PDF files have many of the same benefits as HTML documents in terms of being a compact medium for recreating graphically rich pages. They have the additional benefit that, unlike HTML documents, PDF files are not dependent on the author and the recipient having identical fonts and settings on their computers.

PDF files can be viewed within all major current web browsers in windows. They have the additional benefit over the HTML format that they can be saved for off-line viewing and printing.

PDF files can be byte served over the web to speed up access to large amounts of information. This process is similar to the process of streaming of video files, so you don’t have to download the full file before you can use/view it. After grabbing the first part of data, page-on-demand continues to download the rest of the file. What this means is that a visitor to a website could read the first page and then jump immediately to the seventh page without having to wait!

Full-text search capabilities are available for PDF files.

PDF pages can, when created with the proper software,be password protected. For example, you can require a password to open and view the file but equally you could allow files to be opened and viewed but not copied from or printed without a password. This flexibility makes PDFs the ideal medium for publishing material (e-books) on the Internet.

When you sign up with your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you will usually receive several free personal email accounts. For example, if your provider is AOL, you email address may be newuser1@aol.com, newuser2@aol.com, etc. It is highly recommended that you do not use these email accounts without some thought. Be very SELECTIVE when using your email address. Maybe close friends or family. Unfortunately, your account can be compromised even then. Once your account name/address is “in the wild” , it will be spammed forever. You will get so much junk mail, it will be non-usable. The ISP will not be able to filter this junk without blocking mail you want. They may also charge you to disable this account and create a new one (no longer free). Enter the throw away email.

Use one of the many FREE email service web sites and create you very own throw away account. Then when you visit a web site that requires a “valid” email address, you supply the throw away one.

Pros:

1. Its free

2. Its a “real” account (you can send and receive mail).

3. Its relatively safe (don’t open attachments or click on links).

4. If it is spammed, just delete ALL or just ignore the account for several weeks. Most of these email sites will de-activate your account for non-use. If that happens, just create a new one.

Cons:

1. Its another email account you have to keep track of.
